I know I just did a tag a couple of days ago, but this one seemed so fun, I just had to do it! Better avoid reading this post if you aren’t yet caught up with The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King though.
This tag was made by Xandra from Starry Book Tales and I found it over on Starlight Book Tales. Consider yourselves tagged! Don’t forget to link back to the original creator of the tag as well!
Jude: a character who would probably kill you in your sleep
Anyone remember Dunyasha from the Six of Crows duology? She was scary. She felt so righteous in assassinating people, too. She’d definitely be able to kill me in my sleep without a second thought.
Carden: a character who seems like a bad guy, but is ultimately more complex than you thought
I know half the world is probably going to say Rhys, and I 100% agree, but I’d also like to add Dara from the City of Brass. He kind of started off as a neutral character, but this dude has so many layers that I still don’t know whether to view him as a villain or a good guy.
Locke: a character or plot twist that made you want to throw the book
For character I’m going to say both Mare and Juliette in their respective second books. They were so whiny. And I know it’s bad to say that, but they just were.
The only plot twist that almost made me toss my book across the room was when “that thing” happened in A Storm of Swords. If you watch the show (season three, y’all) or read the books, you know what I’m talking about.
Taryn: a character who deceived you
I was really hoping that Maven would be double double crossing everyone, and that he’d be on the rebels’ side in the end. Alas, that never happened.
Vivi: a book that was significantly different from the others in its series
I think that the contrast between Caraval and Legendary is really striking. I loved both, but Tella is so different than Scarlet, and it made for an entirely different story and style.
Valerian: a character who just needs to die (or, you know, get stabbed)
I can’t think of any main character I’ve ever disliked, except for maybe Mal. Malina is definitely my least favorite ship. Other than that, there are a couple of truly horrible side characters I really wanted to shoot.
Oak: a smol character you would protect at all costs
Dorian. Final answer.
The Cruel Prince: a book that surprised you with a twist
Oh where to begin. I get deceived so easily, so here is a small list:
- The Kiss of Deception
- Literally every book in the Illuminae Files
- Also literally every book in the Nevernight Chronicle
- The Hero of Ages
- Days of Blood and Starlight
The Wicked King: a book you thought was better (or worse) than the first in the series
Generally, I think most second books I’ve read were better than the first. ACOMAF definitely tops the list, though.
One I thought was worse than the first was Glass Sword. I still ended up really liking the series, but it took a little more effort to get through this sequel.
The Queen of Nothing: a book you’re excited for, but know nothing about
Probably the Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson. It’s the fourth new era Mistborn book, and it’s been coming for a while now. I’m really excited to read the conclusion, but I have no idea what the plot is anymore? Time to read some summaries I guess.
And there it is! This was very fun to do, and I hope y’all give this tag a try as well!
