How to get out of a book slump

We all suffer from it from time to time.. the dreaded book slump. That moment when you finish a book that was so great, that you can’t move on. Or when you’re just not in the mood to read at all. Luckily, I’ve put together some tips to get out of it! A couple of months ago I already published a post like this, so here is a more updated version!

Try to find a book that resembles the one you just finished!

Say you’ve just read an epic fantasy novel with magic and dragons. Diving into a science fiction with space battles is probably not going to make your book slump go away. For me it helps if I gradually step out of the world I just came from, so I would choose another fantasy book to read!

Find recommendations!

This tip kind of resembles the first one, but sometimes you just don’t know what to read at all. In that case you could reach out to fellow booklovers for recommendations! If you have a go-to bookstore in your area, chances are that the employees can help you find your next read. Us booksellers pride ourselves in recommending your next favorite read! Also, the next time you order books online, check out the “others viewed this as well” section, you might be surprised!

Reread your favorite book!

Sometimes you just need to go back to something familiar. I love reading one of my old favorites when I’m in a slump. It’s strangely relaxing to read something you already know. My go-to reread when I’m in a slump is Harry Potter. The first book is small and can easily be read in a few hours. After reading that I’m usually ready to dive in another book!

Reread what you just read!

This one sounds a little odd, but one time when I finished a really good book and I didn’t want to move on, so I read it again. I didn’t have to focus so much on keeping up with the story, either. This gave me enough time to ponder what I was in the mood for next. I didn’t even make it to the end of my reread because by then I had already figured out what I wanted to read next!

Sometimes you just need a break

I’ll admit, sometimes reading something else just doesn’t work. In that case, it is best in my view to do something else for a while! Try catching up with your shows on Netflix, paint that scene you’ve been wanting to paint since forever. It’s okay to take a break from reading once in a while. Reading should be fun, and when you pressure yourself to read so much it’ll seem more and more like a task instead of a way to relax.

These are things I like to do when I have a book slump, but if you have other ways to kill that slump, do let me know!
