Why you should go to Bookcon 2018

It is almost time for the annual Bookcon in New York City! It is being held on June 2 & 3, and there are a ton of reasons why you should go.

The first reason you should go is because you get to hang out in NYC, duh.

New York unfortunately is not around the corner for everyone, and even if it is, getting there can get tricky. I always recommend checking out bus services like Greyhound or BestBus! I took BestBus last time and only paid $30 for a round trip. And the bus even had Wi-fi! Even better, BestBus will drop you right off at Penn Station, which is really close to the Javits Center and to multiple hotel options.

Which brings me to my second point, where are you going to stay?

The Bookcon website has multiple hotel options listed, but if you’re anything like me you want to save your money for books and food. The last time I went to NYC I stayed at the Chelsea International Hostel for only 90 bucks. It’s on 21st street, so still not super far away from Javits Center! (Though you might want to consider taking a taxi if you’re going to haul books around all day, hehe)

Anyway, hostels are a great option for people on a budget!

“So uhh.. which authors are going to be there?”
I’M GLAD YOU ASKED

I was going through the list of authors that they have listed as guests right now, and I was silently screaming. Here are some of my favorite YA/fantasy/sci-fi authors that are going to show up:

First of all, they have Cassandra Clare listed as a guest, which is really exciting for me, because she is one of the top authors I want to meet. She will be on site on Saturday for panels and autographing.

Leigh Bardugo is also going to be there, so if I go it will be the second time I get to see her! I went to her TLOT tour a few months back, and she is honestly so funny and a great speaker. I had a ton of fun! She is also going to be there on Saturday for panels and autographing.

Marissa Meyer is also a guest, which again, is really exciting for me, because I missed my chance to meet her when she was on tour in The Netherlands (Okay, I was kinda on the other side of the ocean, but still). Lisanne from OhMyBookBlog was nice enough to send me a signed bookmark though! This time, I hope to get a signed book too, because she is going to be there on Saturday AND Sunday for panels and autographing.

Another author I’m really excited for is Victoria Aveyard, because Warstorm will be out then, and she keeps coming SO close to Washington DC with her tours, but never quite close enough for me to drive out there. She is going to be there on Saturday and will be doing panels and autographing.

And so many more amazing authors are going to be there, like:

Veronica Roth
Holly Black
Stephanie Garber
Tomi Adeyemi (Looks like I really need to read Children of Blood and Bone now)
Renée Ahdieh
Sabaa Tahir
Nicola Yoon
Jenny Han
Neal Shusterman
Naomi Novik
Marie Lu
Alexandra Bracken
Angie Thomas
Tahereh Mafi

The best part is that this is not even a comprehensive list! There will truly be an author for everyone.

There are two other fantasy authors I am EXTREMELY excited for, and they are V.E. Schwab and Brandon Sanderson.
If you haven’t read A Darker Shade of Magic and the Mistborn trilogy yet, do yourself a favor and start now. You will not regret it! These two will be around on Saturday for panels and autographing.

Of course, getting autographs from all your favorites authors is one of your top goals, but there are some things you need to do before going. All signings in the autographing area will be digitally ticketed. You can get autographing tickets by submitting your badge number/order number to Bookcon. An email with a unique barcode will then be sent to you to use on the day you’re going to Bookcon. According to Bookcon, there is a limit of two signings per person, so pick smart! However, if one of the signings is not sold out, it is still possible to get in line.

To top it off, here are some fun things to do in NYC that are not related to Bookcon:

1: Check out the Nintendo store!

This store is located close to the Rockefeller center and is apparently the only Nintendo store in the world. They have all kinds of cool things if you like gaming; like plushies, apparel, and of course games!

2: The Highline

In my opinion you can’t visit New York without visiting the Highline. This metroline-turned-park attracts tourists from all over! I personally really like the landscaping and the views are amazing. And there is an ice cream shop as well 🙂

3: Chelsea Market

Right below the Highline you can find Chelsea market. This indoor market hall has all kinds of stalls with food, crafts, and more! I’d say it’s definitely worth checking out.

I really want to go to Bookcon this year, so if anyone is going, let me know! It would be awesome to meet up with some fellow bookstagrammers! ^-^
